An actor becomes a star! They becomes so giant a star that they loses touch together with his craft and becomes someone commercial. His mentor is so upset that they refuses to have anything to do with him! But the star desires to become an actor again and they has a compelling reason to do so. They desires to return to the roots of his craft so that they can leave behind a legacy. They is about to leave and they desires to do so in a memorable way! There is born Uttama Villain.
Uttama Villain is in lots of ways the portrait of a man who became an actor, then grew in to a star and came back to finish as an actor. But it is not his journey as an actor as well as a star that is chronicled. It is also his journey as a human being, as a brother, a mate, a husband as well as a lovely to his mentor that is shown. It is a complex narrative which gets further layers as a centuries elderly story unravels in the kind of his final film being made.
While exploring his personal life and his relationships that are tumultuous and troubled for most parts, there is also the story of his film being made, of a stage actor, his lover and the threats they must face from a scheming adversary. The tales are complex in themselves and to write a screenplay that flows effortlessly between the requires a genius which is why they have Kamal Haasan at work. They writes the screenplay in a way that neither of the narratives appear superior or diminished and you are equally interested in both. speaking, it is the story of the actor that is the primary premise of the film and the story of the film being made is only secondary. But the the uniqueness of its setting and the splendid visual language adopted for these portions doesn't make you feel that you are following a subtext that complements the main narrative. It is this genius in writing that comes foremost in Uttama Villain. Positive scenes stand out for their sheer impact at an emotional level. The scene where the actor and his son, who have thus far had a very uncomfortable relationship finally come to terms with each other after brother reveals something and the scene where the actor reconciles together with his estranged relatives stand out. The much hyped 'Theiyyam' scene is all magnificence; the kind that has not been seen in Tamil cinema till now.
Uttama Villain is a film that will stand apart from the normal Tamil film. It is a complete story that does not compromise at any stage of the narrative. The writer does not take sides of definite characters which gives us a beautifully balanced story. The music, by Ghibran, fits in beautifully & the film gets visually splendid when the screenplay allows it to do so. It is not the usual entertainer. It is complex, it's layers, it demands your attention & it delights. The climax is of the best of recent times. This is the kind of cinema they have been waiting for. Hats off to the genius of Kamal. Kudos to Ramesh Aravind & team.
